Texts Reveal Marjorie Taylor Greene Suggested Trump Declare ‘Marshall Law’ After Jan. 6: ‘They Will Destroy Our Country’

Marshall Law #MarshallLaw

CNN revealed Monday more text messages sent to former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows from allies and family members on Jan. 6 urging the president to take action to stop the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The texts to Meadows changed drastically in tone in the weeks following Jan. 6 and became more bombastic and remained focused on overturning the 2020 presidential election.

In the “trove of texts,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) stands out for her surprisingly level-headed message on Jan. 6 itself and then her characteristically bombastic suggestion Trump call for “Marshall law” on Jan. 17.

On Jan. 6 Greene texted Meadows:

Mark I was just told there is an active shooter on the first floor of the Capitol Please tell the President to calm people This isn’t the way to solve anything

She texted again later that day, writing:

Mark we don’t think these attackers are our people. We think they are Antifa. Dressed like Trump supporters.

Then on the 7th, she started to change her tune a bit, continued to blame Antifa, but still denounced the violence of the day:

Yesterday was a terrible day. We tried everything we could in our objection to the 6 states. I’m sorry nothing worked. I don’t think that President Trump caused the attack on the Capitol. It’s not his fault. Antifa was mixed in the crowed and instigated it, and sadly people followed. But when people try everything and no one listens and nothing works, I guess they think they have no other choice. Absolutely no excuse and I fully denounce all of it, but after shut downs all year and a stolen election, people are saying that they have no other choice. I defended Trump last night on Newsmax. He has been the greatest President. I will continue to defend him. And you if anyone attacks you. I hope you are ok. I feel badly for everyone.

Ten days later, however, Greene treated Jan. 6 like a distant memory and Greene raised the prospect of Trump calling for martial law to stop Biden from being inaugurated:

In our private chat with only Members, several are saying the only way to save our Republic is for Trump to call for Marshall law. I don’t know on those things. I just wanted you to tell him. They stole this election. We all know. They will destroy our country next. Please tell him to declassify as much as possible so we can go after Biden and anyone else!

The texts, which are just some of the 2,319 messages CNN obtained, offer a unique window into Greene’s rhetoric on and around Jan. 6 – a topic being litigated in a Georgia courtroom as her ability to run for reelection is being challenged. Greene’s ability to run for reelection is being challenged by a group of voters arguing she should be disqualified based on a post-Civil War era law that bars insurrectionists from seeking reelection.

Last week, Greene was asked under oath during a hearing for that legal challenge if she asked Trump to call for martial law, she told the court she could not remember.
