Super Bowl LVII featured a pair of Texas natives at quarterback Sunday night, with a familiar face taking home MVP honors in an all-time classic in Glendale, Arizona.
Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 38-35 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Eagles to help his team capture their second Super Bowl victory in the last four seasons. Kansas City trailed 24-14 at halftime, and more concerningly for the Chiefs, Mahomes suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter. But the post-halftime version of Mahomes showed just exactly why he is already a future Hall of Fame quarterback after just five seasons as a starting QB.
Mahomes finished Sunday night with one of the more efficient performances in Super Bowl history despite accumulating just 182 passing yards. The now-two-time Super Bowl MVP tallied 21 completions on 27 attempts, and he added a trio of touchdown passes.
The former Texas Tech quarterback made arguably his biggest play of the game with his legs as time ticked down in the fourth quarter. He scampered for 26 yards down to the Philadelphia 17-yard line with just over two minutes left, setting the Chiefs up for a game-winning field goal with eight seconds to play.
Mahomes’s quarterback counterpart turned in his own impressive performance in the desert Sunday night: Houston native and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts set an NFL record for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in the Super Bowl with a trio of scores, and he added 304 yards and a touchdown pass for good measure. Yet even after putting up 35 points, Hurts’s brilliance wasn’t enough to keep up with Kansas City’s offensive machine.
Kansas City’s quarterback is now climbing into some historic company with Sunday’s Super Bowl MVP honor. He is now one of three quarterbacks in NFL history to earn multiple regular-season MVPs and multiple Super Bowl MVPs, joining Tom Brady and Joe Montana. And while Mahomes has a long ways to go to steal the proverbial GOAT crown from Brady, the Tyler, Texas native is impressively within striking distance at just 27.
