NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans are expected to part ways with veteran center Ben Jones according to a report from A to Z Sports. Jones will save the Titans $3.7 million in salary cap space, but still have a $4.5 million charge in dead money.

Jones release is the latest move the Titans have made to clear out as much cap space as they possibly can. New Titans’ general manager Ran Carthon has executed six veteran cuts at this point. We saw Taylor Lewan, Robert Woods, Zach Cunningham and Randy Bullock as part of the initial wave of cuts, but since the Titans have added Bud Dupree and now Ben Jones to that list.

The most interesting part of the Jones’ cut might be the ultimatum Jones was given. According to the report, Jones was given the choice of “retire or be released” and choose to hit the open market. This would indicate that Jones still wants to play football next season.

While Jones is an older player at 33 years old, who will turn 34 by the start of the season, he still was playing good football when healthy. Jones made his first pro bowl in 2022. The issue the Titans may have discussed is his ability to stay healthy. Jones missed five games last season and finished the year on injured reserve due to multiple injuries, but mostly because of multiple concussions throughout the year.

Outside of last season though, Jones has been a model of durability. He had only missed one game in his entire Titans’ career heading into 2022. So, the Titans are certainly taking a risk by letting a typically healthy player walk, even if Jones is closer to the end of his career.

Jones was signed to the Titans in 2016 and has been a foundational piece of the Titans’ turnaround as a franchise since his first season with the team. Jones has been a leader in the locker room and on the field. His value will be hard to replace and for the minimal savings the Titans are getting from the move, it is fair to be confused at why the move was made.
