Teddy Bridgewater has been traded twice during his eight-year career. Both trades were caused by Sam Darnold.
In 2018, after he had recovered from a torn ACL two years earlier, Bridgewater signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets in March. New York then used the third overall pick in the NFL draft to select Darnold, a promising prospect out of USC.
Darnold won the starting job that summer, which made Bridgewater expendable for the Jets. So, five months after signing him, New York traded Bridgewater to the New Orleans Saints. He spent two seasons with the Saints, starting in six games as a fill-in for an injured Drew Brees.
After two years in New Orleans, Bridgewater became a free agent again and signed a three-year deal with the Carolina Panthers in 2020. He served as the Panthers starter last season, but Carolina traded for Darnold in April, making Bridgewater expendable.
Shortly after acquiring Darnold, the Panthers traded Bridgewater to the Denver Broncos, a similar scenario to when New York replaced him with Darnold in 2018.
Bridgewater is now set to compete with Drew Lock for Denver’s starting job this summer. Assuming the Broncos aren’t planning to acquire Darnold, Bridgewater’s roster spot should be safe in 2021.
