Taylor Swift, recent queen of surprises, has yes, you guessed it, another surprise for fans.
After very casually hinting that she was up to nothing, the singer has confirmed that she was indeed up to something. Cue up your Disney+, because tonight at midnight PT/3 a.m. ET, Taylor is dropping a new film, folklore: the long pond studio sessions.
Earlier this year, Taylor released folklore, a surprise album that had the singer exploring a new side to her music. Recorded during the ongoing pandemic “in isolation,” folklore featured Taylor’s signature songwriting in a more ambient, acoustic, piano-driven landscape. Although Taylor has shared some details on the album’s inspiration, the Disney+ movie will allow listeners further insight into the world of folklore.
Announcing a companion film on Instagram, Taylor wrote, “Well it’s 11/24 and 24-11=13 so I’ve got an announcement…You haven’t seen this film before ✨ folklore: the long pond studio sessions will be out tonight at midnight PST on @DisneyPlus! #folkloreOnDisneyPlus.”
In the brief teaser trailer, Taylor is shown singing songs like “cardigan” and “august,” and speaking with her collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner. “There’s something about the complete and total uncertainty of like, if we’re going to have to recalibrate everything, we should start with what we love the most first,” she says in the opening seconds.
Described as an “intimate concert” in the Instagram trailer, the film also features Taylor discussing the recording process and the album. Per a press release, Taylor will “perform each song in order” and also reveal “the stories and secrets behind all 17 songs.” At one point, she cracks a joke about the particular necessity of folklore, saying, “It turned out that everybody needed a good cry.”
In her Instagram Story, Taylor explained that due to previous COVID-19 restrictions, she had recorded the entirety of folklore without ever seeing Jack or Aaron. With the release of folklore: the long pond studio sessions, the trio got together, along with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and filmed this special recording session. “I’m so excited for you to see it,” she says. “It was an amazing experience getting to really jump into the album with the people that I made it with, and I really hope you enjoy it.”
