Taemin has given listeners a song for the summer just before he leaves for military enlistment.

On May 18, K-pop veteran and overall icon Taemin (who is also part of the group SHINee) released his new song “Advice,” which is the title track of his mini-album that was also released today. The song and its music video are a head-bopping gift to fans before he’ll pause his career to complete his mandatory military service for nearly two years, starting at the end of May. The project has a total of five tracks, including a collaboration with former Girls’ Generation member Taeyeon called “If I Could Tell You.”

“Advice” is an up-tempo R&B track with a soft piano instrumental; it was composed by Mich Hansen, Lucas Secon, Daniel Davidsen, Peter Wallevik, and Wayne Hector. The Korean lyrics were written by Jo Yoon Kyung, and the message behind the song serves as a warning to judgemental people and those who are caught up in their prejudices. Per the Genius translation, Taemin sings on the chorus: “The more you try to trap me, I’ll go off the rails so take a / Good look, if you want to see the end, push my buttons / It’s for you, one advice / Best take my own advice.”

The music video is dark and twisted and could easily serve as a mood board for a high fashion villain. We see Taemin in his superhero attire (a crop top), a bedazzled ski mask, a bun with colorful extensions, and the confidence of a performer who knows he’s unstoppable. He also displayed his energetic choreography that included popping, body isolations, hip rolls, and other signature moves that further cement Taemin’s legendary status in the industry.

Needless to say, fans will be sad to see him take a pause, but luckily he’s left us with a nonstop string of hits. We’ll be cycling through “Criminal,” “Idea,” and “Advice” on repeat.
