Just as it seemed that Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s dreams of promotion had gone up in smoke, Reece McAlear scored a stunning double to set up a mouth-watering winner-takes-all cinch Premiership play-off final on Monday at McDiarmid Park.

Both Billy Dodds and Callum Davidson may regret instructing their teams to soak up pressure in this contest, with St Johnstone taking advantage of some deep defending in the first half to score two goals in a six-minute spell before Inverness turned the tie on its head when McAlear scored twice in a seven minutes.

The visitors should have put this play-off to bed long before McAlear bagged his first in the 73rd minute but instead they now face a nervous evening at their home ground as they
