Sydney McLaughlin sets a world record and wins the gold in the women’s 400-meter hurdles at the World Athletics Championships

Sydney McLaughlin set a new world record while dominating the women’s 400-meter hurdles at the World Athletics Championships on Friday night at Hayward Field in Eugene.

McLaughlin finished in a world record time of 50.68 seconds, breaking her own previous record of 51.41 seconds that she set at the 2022 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships last month. McLaughlin is the first female athlete to post a time under 51 seconds in the event.

McLaughlin, who won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year, added a gold medal at the worlds to her rapidly growing list of accomplishments.

Femke Bol of the Netherlands finished second in a time of 52.27 seconds and American Dalilah Muhammad was third in a time of 53.13.

The United States’ Shamier Little was fourth in 53.76, while American Britton Wilson crossed fifth in 54.02.
