A beachfront condo building in the Florida town of Surfside collapsed early Thursday morning.

At least one person was killed and other residents remain trapped under the rubble as firefighters work to rescue survivors, according to the Miami-Dade Police.

“The building is literally pancaked,” Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said during a press conference. “That is heartbreaking because it doesn’t mean to me that we are going to be as successful as we wanted to be in finding people alive.”

Burkett said 10 people were treated at the scene and two were brought to the hospital, one of whom died. He also said 15 families walked out of the building on their own.

Officials do not yet know the cause of the collapse.

Roof work was being done on the building, Burkett added, but he said that work goes on in other buildings and he did not know how that could have caused the building to collapse.

“We’re on the scene so it’s still very active,” Sgt. Marian Cruz of the Surfside Police Department said. “What I can tell you is the building is twelve floors. The entire backside of the building has collapsed.”

The condo development was built in 1981 on the beach in the southeast corner of Surfside. The current asking price for a few two-bedroom units was listed at $600,000 to $700,000.

Surfside is located about six miles from Miami Beach.
