Supernatural season 15 is determined to go out with a bang following the death of a major character on Thursday night.

The fantasy series, which launched in 2005, stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as brothers who hunt evil supernatural beings.

In the emotional latest episode of the final season, called Despair, angel Castiel (Misha Collins) sacrificed himself to The Empty to save Dean (Jensen Ackles).

The pair shared a bond anyway as Castiel had previously saved Dean from Hell, but the episode suggested this bond had become something deeper for Cas.

He told Dean about the deal he made with The Empty to save Jack (Alexander Calvert) and opened up about his true feelings.

‘Everything you have ever done, the good and the bad, you have done for love,’ he said.

‘You raised your little brother for love, you fought for this whole world for love, that is who you are. You’re the most caring man on Earth. You are the most selfless loving human being I will ever know.’

Castiel added that Dean ‘changed’ him by making him care about people, and here’s where it gets interesting, as when he told Dean he was saying goodbye, he said ‘I love you’ moments before The Empty took him away.

Star Misha tweeted after the episode: ‘Tonight, watching Cas talk to Dean, I got lost in the story and forgot for a moment that I’m the one who plays that angel and I thought, “He’s how I want to be. He’s openhearted and he’s selfless and he’s true.”‘

Fans of the pairing ‘Destiel’ (Dean and Castiel) lost it as they took Castiel’s words as confirmation of their belief in a romantic connection between the two men.

It’s worth noting that Dean didn’t say ‘I love you’ back, however some have taken the heartbroken look on his face to suggest he might have felt the same way.

Cue a lot of tears from fans on Twitter.

However Castiel’s confession, then death soon after, did bring up the long-running row about TV shows ‘queerbaiting’ their viewers as well as the ‘bury your gays’ trope of killing off LGBTQ+ characters, although Cas’ sexuality isn’t directly addressed.

With only a couple of episodes to go before Supernatural ends for good, we don’t expect the heartbreak to end there.

Supernatural airs on The CW in the US.
