Sunny but very cold Wednesday, rain mixing with sleet Thursday
Good Wednesday #GoodWednesday
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Good Wednesday morning. We have clear skies overhead and some areas of freezing fog scattered across the Tennessee Valley, especially in areas with a thick snow pack on the ground.
Morning temperatures are frigid in the single digits with a wind chill below zero in most locations. As expected, the roadways are still covered in snow and ice and will lead to very difficult and hazardous driving conditions… please travel only if needed. Wind Chill Warnings and Wind Chill Advisories are in effect through 9:00 AM CST. This is dangerous cold to people, pets and pipes. Cold weather safety and good judgment should be exercised. Today will at least bring abundant sunshine but high temperatures will only top out around 30 degrees with a light southwesterly wind.
Some melting may occur from the sunshine but all roads will refreeze as temperatures drop into the teens again overnight. Thursday will be a warmer day with highs forecast to be in the upper 30s to lower 40s before another system and trailing cold front moves in from the west. Thursday is a First Alert Weather Day for scattered rain showers mixing with sleet arriving by late morning into the afternoon. Light snow showers are possible late Thursday night into Friday but no accumulation is expected.
The greater concern will be a flash freeze on the wet roads and travel will be hazardous or impossible again. Behind the cold front, another surge of cold air will settle in for Friday and the weekend with high temperatures in the 20s and 30s through Sunday. Next week is trending warmer with chances for rain showers and isolated thunderstorms returning to the Tennessee Valley.
