Stuart man collecting debt brings person to car at gunpoint, records show

A woman called police and said a man took her boyfriend to her car at gunpoint at a Stuart hotel Friday, investigators said.
Brandon Copeland drew a gun on the man and took him to a Chevy Malibu in the parking lot of the Suburban Studios Stuart in the 1900 block of U.S. 1, according to Stuart police.

Copeland, 33, of Stuart, faces charges of robbery with a firearm or other deadly weapon, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a felon and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, according to an arrest affidavit.
The man who had the gun drawn on him said he owed money to Copeland, who had come to collect, the affidavit stated.
Copeland took the woman’s car keys and brought the man to the vehicle, investigators said.
Stuart police arrived soon after and found Copeland sitting in the car with the man, according to the affidavit.
Officers found a 9 mm handgun and an unspecified amount of crack cocaine, the affidavit stated.
Investigators said they had probable cause to arrest Copeland based on their findings.
Copeland is in custody at Martin County Jail on a $35,000 bond, according to a jail official.
