Stuart R. Bell was named as the University of Alabama’s 29th president in the summer of 2015.
The Abilene, Texas, native was the sole finalist named to succeed Judy Bonner as UA’s president.
Bell came to Tuscaloosa from Louisiana State University, where he was executive vice president and provost. He was in Baton Rouge from 2012-15.
He was dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas from 2002-12.
Bell had a 16-year tenure at UA beginning in 1986 as an assistant professor in the College of Engineering’s department of mechanical engineering. He was named department head nine years later.

He founded and directed UA’s Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies, an interdisciplinary research center producing new generations of engineers and scientists.
His research concentrated on combustion engines and his areas of expertise included fuels for engines, innovative engine designs and modeling of engine and engine processes.

Bell earned a degree in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M in 1979. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering in 1981 and 1986 at Texas A&M.
While at Texas A&M, Bell met his wife, Susan. They are the parents of three adult children: Stuart, Stacy and Stephen. The Bells have three granddaughters and a grandson. Both of Bell’s sons are engineers. His daughter Stacy is a UA alumna.
