Strolling beaver temporarily closes entrance at Royal York subway station

An entrance at the Royal York subway station was temporarily closed after a beaver strolled in early Thursday morning.

The TTC said the beaver wandered into the station on Bloor Street West after 6 a.m. The Grenview automatic entrance was closed due to an “animal in distress” while officials were notified, the agency said.

Animal control officers have since removed the beaver and the station entrance has reopened.

Jenn Abbott (@jennabbott65) tweeted out a photo of the beaver and, predictably, Twitter had a field day.

Some wondered whether the beaver paid its fare.

“He only paid a nickel,” tweeted Nick O’Brien (@nobrien78).

Some, including Mariana Hernandez (@Mariana_ArtsTO), tweeted that a beaver stuck in a station is the “most Canadian thing ever.”

“Love it and hope it gets back to its natural habitat,” Hernandez tweeted.

TTC spokesperson Stuart Green wanted to ensure the public that the beaver was safe.

“For all those wondering, Rascal, the Royal York beaver, is safe and with animal services,” Green tweeted. “Jerry Mathers is relieved.”
