Strictly Come Dancing’s head judge Shirley Ballas has come under fire from shocked and annoyed viewers after awarding her first 10 of the series.

The judge, who hit back at her critics with a defiant remark on last week’s show, was on her feet as young singer HRVY performed a salsa to Dynamite and was full of praise for the 21-year-old and his pro partner Janette Manrara.

When asked by host Tess Daly for her critique, Shirley enthused: “He’s made me hot hot hot! It was powerful, it was musical, you had amazing leading skills.

“It’s not easy to get this wonderful, up, round, pot stir her here, throw her over there, catch her and be absolutely on time and musical. I’m lost for words, I couldn’t do it justice enough by saying anything more.”

And Shirley’s feelings on the dance were made even clearer when it came to dishing out the scores. Uttering her now famous catchphrase “it’s never too early for a 10 from Shirley” she brandished her 10 paddle much to HRVY’s delight and surprise.

But, while also surprised many Strictly viewers at home did not share in the delight.

One tweeted: “HRVY was very good….but a 10?!….really Shirley??” and another reacted: “a 10????? for that??????? is shirley watching something else”

A third posted: “SHIRLEY GAVE HARVEY A 10 THATS F*****G INSANE? and using Shirley’s catchphrase against her, another unimpressed viewer commented: “I’d say it is too early for your 10, Shirley”

HRVY got an 8 from Craig Revel-Horwood and a nine from stand-in judge Anton du Beke, giving him a total of 27/30.
