Time is officially running out to shop for Christmas gifts in stores and online for pickup and same-day delivery.

The big picture: With Christmas Eve falling on a Saturday, expect stores to be busier than last year. However, the epic winter storm hitting swaths of the U.S. could affect store and mall hours.

There’s been a resurgence of consumers shopping in stores this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation.

The shopping season also began earlier than in past years with retailers wanting to help consumers spread out their purchases as they deal with higher costs due to inflation.

Yes, but: The majority of stores will close early on Christmas Eve and will stay closed on Christmas like in past years.

70% of shoppers plan to shop the week after Christmas, an NRF survey found.

Meanwhile, a CouponBirds survey of 3,150 Americans found close to one-third of couples said they would wait until Christmas Eve to shop for their partner’s gift.

Christmas Eve same-day delivery

Major retailers will offer same-day delivery through Christmas Eve with on-demand companies including Instacart, Shipt, DoorDash, Uber, and Roadie.

Be smart: Place orders early in the day as availability will be limited.

Instacart told Axios that its platform will operate during normal business hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but “the shopping experience will be dependent on local store openings/hours.”
