Stonehenge portrait projections of the Queen blasted as ‘hideous and inappropriate’

A tribute to the Queen in the lead-up to her Platinum Jubilee celebrations from Stonehenge has been blasted as “hideous and inappropriate” by social media users.

The “spellbinding homage” to Her Majesty dedicates itself to celebrating her seven decades on the throne, but Twitter was less than convinced by the honouring.

An official tweet from the Stonehenge Twitter account has been relentlessly mocked since its publication at 8am this morning, with thousands piling onto the display to mock it.

The display itself depicts the reign of the Queen through a series of images projected onto the stones of Stonehenge, with a timeline-like experience across the stones.

Stonehenge’s original tweet read: “Our spellbinding homage to Her Majesty The #Queen! We’ve projected eight portraits of Queen Elizabeth II onto Stonehenge in celebration of the #PlatinumJubilee.”

But a celebration of the Platinum Jubilee swiftly turned into a mockery of the historic site, with thousands mocking Stonehenge for the bizarre tribute, and a handful cracking jokes at the expense of the prehistoric monument and the Queen.

One Twitter user wrote: “This is dreadful. An insult to the timeless history of those stones. Plus it’s tacky.”

Another said: “Yikes. I thought this was a spoof at first, so tasteless. I’m surprised the palace hasn’t requested you take it down tbh.”

A third weighed in, saying: “Is this what my English Heritage membership fee is going on?? Can’t put into words how hideous and inappropriate this is”.

Stonehenge then tweeted out a behind-the-scenes look of how the effect works, with projectors lined up to display images of Her Majesty onto the side of the stones.

One person replied: “The good news is that you can just turn it off at any time. Now would probably be best.”

Stonehenge has been a site of religious significance for pagans since the 12th century, with some Twitter users asking whether or not the display of the Queen on the side of the ancient religious site was disrespectful.

One user replied with: “Those stones were put there by Pagans. The Queen is a Christian. Bit disrespectful, dontchathink?

Another wrote: “As a pagan who has visited this intensely spiritual ‘church’, I am disgusted it is being used like this.”

Since the initial tweet was sent out by the official Stonehenge account, the word “Stonehenge” is now trending on Twitter.

Many are presumably hoping Stonehenge follow the advice of one Twitter user, who wrote: “Please don’t ever do this again.”
