Peacock is ready to get Laid.
The NBCUniversal-backed streamer has handed out a straight-to-series order for Laid, a comedy starring Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and from writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna.
Khan (Young Rock, Always Be My Maybe) and McKenna (Son of Zorn) are writing and exec producing the series for Universal Television, where the former’s Fierce Baby is based with an overall deal.
Laid revolves around a woman who finds out that her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her “sex timeline” to confront her past in order to move forward. Peacock says Laid is a “f—ked up rom-com where the answer to ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.’”
Laid is based on the Australian series of the same name that was created by Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher, produced by Liz Watts. John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment will exec produce alongside Fierce Baby’s Jennifer Carreras. Hardy, Fisher and Watts of Porchlight Films as well as All3Media International will also exec produce. Star Hsu will also be credited as an EP.
Khan, for her part, counts NBC’s Young Rock, ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat and Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23 among her small-screen credits. On the feature side, she’s helmed Totally Killer and Always Be My Maybe. She’s repped by UTA and JSSK.
McKenna, who worked with Khan on Don’t Trust the B—, also counts the original Will & Grace, The Goldbergs, The Grinder and Ghosted among her credits. She’s repped by attorney David Matlof.
Hsu, who also starred in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, counts Set It Up, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Joy Ride and The Fall Guy among her credits. She’s with CAA.
For Peacock, Laid joins a scripted slate that also includes Ted, Poker Face, Bupkis, Bel-Air, Twisted Metal and Dr. Death, among others. A premiere timeframe for Laid has not yet been determined.
