‘Steam coming off him’ — Smith ‘livid’ with Khawaja over ‘horrible’ moment

Khawaja #Khawaja

Steve Smith was left furious on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka after being burned in the middle by his teammate Usman Khawaja.

Australia had lost two quick wickets in the final session when Smith, who has only scored one Test century since the 2019 Ashes, joined Khawaja at the crease in Galle.

He made it to six before he and Khawaja appeared to agree to a quick single, only for Khawaja to change his mind halfway up the wicket.

Smith was visibly ropeable after he was run-out at the striker’s end.

He was seenshrugging his shoulders and shaking his head in disbelief in Khawaja’s direction.

The head shaking continued and Smith was seen muttering to himself as he left the field with his whites muddied from trying to make his ground.

The dismissal means that Smith is still searching for his first Test century since January 2021.
