“Stay in Line”: Hollywood Activists Take to Twitter to Reassure In-Person Voters
STAY IN LINE #STAYINLINE
As polls closed on the East Coast on Tuesday, Hollywood stars made one last push for in-person voters.
Stars including Gabrielle Union, John Legend, Kim Kardashian West, Billy Eichner, Kumail Nanjiani and Padma Lakshmi took to social media on Tuesday evening to encourage those in line to vote to stay in line, as early numbers and projections started to trickle in. Though poll closing times and rules vary by state, many close at 8 p.m. local time, and voters in several states are still allowed to cast their ballots as long as they are in line at closing time.
Swing states Florida and Wisconsin were of particularly emphasis from the Hollywood crowd, with Union, Josh Gad and Kevin McHale sending messages to Florida voters and Kerry Washington and Jurnee Smollett cheering on those in line in Wisconsin. Eichner also shouted out South Carolina, Nanjiani tweeted North Carolina and Ashley Judd supported Arizona voters she had spoken to via phonebanking.
The “stay in line” message was also echoed on both sides of the political aisle as Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg and Donald Trump Jr. tweeted similar sentiments. The push for final votes follows the increasing likelihood that a winner will not be declared on election night, amid historic numbers of mail-in ballots and varying state laws about when votes will be counted.
