Vice President Kamala Harris discounted the “theatrical element” during President Joe Biden’s 2023 State of the Union address, stating that Biden remained “in command” of the situation despite boos and jeers from some GOP lawmakers.
Multiple Republicans heckled Biden throughout his remarks, specifically when he addressed immigration, the opioid crisis, and China. But the president also drew accusations of “empty scaremongering” on Medicare and Social Security, provoking a protracted back-and-forth with GOP lawmakers when he suggested Republicans want to gut the programs.

“I was in the room, obviously, and I think that there, sadly, tends to be a theatrical element to that evening as time has gone on,” Harris told CBS’s Gayle King Wednesday morning when asked about the “interruptions” in Biden’s speech.
“I think the president was in command, and he was focused on the American people, as opposed to necessarily the gamesmanship that was being played in the room,” she continued. “The president started his talk by talking about, with pride, the bipartisan work that has happened between Democrats and Republicans.”
Harris ticked off many of the bipartisan highlights from Biden’s remarks, including the “historic” infrastructure law that is “putting billions of dollars on the streets of America to repair our roads and bridges and deal with things like laying groundwork for high speed internet.”

Despite his economic progress, a number of recent polls show a growing number of people believe they are worse off financially than before Biden took office. Asked about the administration’s public perception Wednesday, Harris simply responded that the “effects” of the pandemic “linger” and that “there’s more to be done.”
“We look at the price of eggs or milk, and we know that there’s still work to be done,” she closed. “All of us have more work to be done on many issues, but that’s a whole other story.”
