Star Wars Fans Are Already Looking Forward To ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 4

It seems Star Wars fans can’t wait for season 4 of “The Mandalorian,” even though season 3 has yet to come out!

This past weekend was the annual four-day fan event known as Star Wars Celebration. This year, it was held in Anaheim, California. Next year, the fan event will take place in London, but fans are still reeling from what they learned just days ago.

Season 3 Of ‘The Mandalorian’ Is Setting Up Big Things For The Star Wars Franchise

Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” is going to debut in February 2023 on Disney+. Fans at the convention center were treated to a first look at the footage for season 3 that hasn’t yet been shown online. Regardless, fans know that they can expect a lot more of Mandalorian culture to take center stage. Katee Sackhoff also revealed that her character of Bo-Katan Kryze will also get to share more of the spotlight with the titular Mandalorian, Din Djarin, played by “Game of Thrones” alum Pedro Pascal.

In a previous interview, actor Giancarlo Esposito, who plays villain Moff Gideon, already confirmed the existence of a fourth season. He teased that both seasons three and four are when fans will “really going to start to get answers.”

However, despite the tease, Lucasfilm has yet to make an official statement about the possibility of a fourth season. That is, until “The Mandalorian” showrunner Jon Favreau confirmed to Cinema Blend that he had already started working on season 4 while at Star Wars Celebration.

It remains to be seen if there will be any sort of a time jump between the third and fourth season of “The Mandalorian.” Favreau revealed that the writing Dave Filoni is doing on the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series “Ahsoka” is “very much informing” the shape of season 4.

“With television, we’re very lucky that we don’t have to rush things through into an hour-and-a-half, two hours,” Favreau told the outlet. “We get to tell stories slowly. So now, as Dave [Filoni]’s doing Ahsoka, it’s very much informing the writing that I’m doing for [The Mandalorian] Season 4. It becomes – how should I put it – more precise.”

Favreau explained that the Disney+ series make a “very fertile ground” for storytelling outside of the nine-episode Skywalker Saga, which wrapped up with “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019.

“When I was writing the first season of Mandalorian, I could do anything, set it anywhere. Dave [Filoni] would read it, we’d go back and forth, I would adjust. And there it was,” Favreau explained. “Now we have to figure out why there are certain Mandalorians who wear helmets, certain ones who don’t wear helmets, what’s happening on Mandalore, what’s Bo-Katan doing at the time? How does she feel about that? Where is the Darksaber? So it really creates very fertile ground for imagination, for storytelling.”

Although the story began as a lone bounty hunter trying to make his way in the galaxy far, far away, Favreau admitted that the story has grown over time. He praised Filoni and his “deep understanding of everything around the time period” for helping “The Mandalorian” fit into the larger Star Wars universe.

“I think that inevitably, no matter how simple you start, the story threads start to connect and weave and overlap,” Favreau explained. “And with Dave Filoni’s deep understanding of everything around the time period, opportunities will always arise when we have story meetings and conversations about, ‘Well, you know what character would be here now…’ I mean, that’s really how the Luke thing happened.”

He also discussed Luke Skywalker’s surprise cameo appearance in the season 2 finale, which he admitted wasn’t “necessarily planned.” However, he admitted that, as they worked through their ideas, it “started to not make sense for it to not be Luke.”

“It wasn’t that we necessarily planned to include Luke Skywalker in Season 2. But as we were looking for [Grogu] to get training, we started to weigh out, ‘Well, what Jedi are around? Who’s left?’ And it started to not make sense for it not to be Luke,” he explained. “As we start to tell stories, those stories take on lives of their own, and they have trajectories. And then as those trajectories begin to organically intersect, larger stories with more characters start to make more sense.”

It remains to be seen how “The Mandalorian” will fit into the large Star Wars universe when it finally concludes its run. Actor Pedro Pascal recently teased the idea of a movie based on “The Mandalorian,” but such an idea has yet to be confirmed by Lucasfilm execs.

In the meantime, fans can still look forward to season 3 of “The Mandalorian,” which hits Disney+ in February 2023.
