What do country stars such as Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Keith Urban have in common? They sing songs written by songwriter, producer and rapper Shy Carter.
Carter performed a serenading and swooning set on Saturday afternoon at the SiriusXM Spotlight Stage for a small crowd who were probably unaware how many hit singles he’s written. He alternated between country, rock, R&B and rapped acapella after one song during his half-hour set.
“Let’s get some beer drinking going on here,” Carter told the crowd before performing “Beer With My Friends.”

A highlight was when he performed his soul jams “Hurry” and “Good Love” in the path between the stage and one of the seating areas in front of the Mane Stage, dancing and high fiving festivalgoers.
Carter started his songwriting career in 2009 providing Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas with the song “Someday,” which reached No. 93 on the Billboard 100 chart. Some of the other songs he’s written include Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s hits “Speak To A Girl” and “Roll the Dice,” and Billy Curlington’s “It Don’t Hurt Like It Used To,” which he also performed on Saturday afternoon.
According to a profile by Forbes, Carter grew up in Nashville playing saxophone in church and ended up in Los Angeles searching for a record deal, where he was connected to rapper Nelly, who signed him as a record producer.
