Novelist and former politician Jeffrey Archer joined Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard on Good Morning Britain to give his view on Boris Johnson’s flat revamp as a formal investigation looks into how he paid for the work. But ITV viewers saw a chaotic clash unfold as Good Morning Britain’s Ben tried to disagree with Jeffrey and was promptly shut down.

“This is the lead item on ITV when half a million people are dying in India,” Jeffrey argued.

“Let me point out one thing. When I was a young man, and I’m now an old man, John Kennedy became president of the United States.

“And his wife, Jackie, decided to design the entire White House and the nation was delighted.”

Susanna commented: “That’s America though.”

But Jeffrey slammed the debate surrounding the Prime Minister, ranting: “It’s ridiculous that we don’t design Number 10 to have a decent flat to allow whoever-“

“That’s a separate argument,” he was told as Ben went to comment: “Jeffrey, when you were in-“

But Jeffrey wouldn’t allow him to finish, snapping: “Wait a moment.”

“You’re making a judgement,” Ben tried again, but Jeffrey responded: “Shh, Ben.”

Stunned, Susanna joked: “We’re busy,” as co-presenter Ben laughed at being silenced.

“I’m happy to wait to hear what the man who’s been appointed to look into it tells us,” Jeffrey snapped.

“I’m not willing to make a judgement before his judgement.”

“The person who the independent advisor reports into is the Prime Minister! Who’s the man that’s being investigated?” argued Ayesha Hazarika.

“I mean even you can see that’s a charade.”

Ben eventually got his point in, adding: “Jeffrey, when you were an MP obviously you would understand Ayesha’s point about the fact that if somebody’s going to make a donation to your cause, to your party, there could be some inherent expectation that you’ll be able to look after them down the line.

“Did you ever find yourself in a situation whereby you had to be very careful about donations being made to a campaign that you were running?”

Jeffrey explained: “I have to say, I come from a boring age having entered the House of Commons at the age of 29, 100 years ago, it didn’t arise.

“I hope the investigation will come out, telling us what we should do in the future. You’re quite right, the world has moved on.

“Things have gone beyond where they should have gone, now let’s have a proper investigation and clamp it down.

“And actually, I agree with Ayesha, we need legal comments in parliament, we need a new law, we need to get this right.

“Otherwise it will just go on and on and on and get completely out of control.”

“This is about transparency,” Susanna argued. “And it’s about integrity.”

It comes as The Electoral Commission revealed it would look into whether payments related to the refurb were correctly recorded.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
