Springer homer sets stage for walk-off in extras

TORONTO — Raimel Tapia was the walk-off hero on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre, battling through his at-bat in the 10th inning to send a sac fly to left field for the 6-5 win over the Red Sox.
This was the Blue Jays’ first walk-off win of the 2022 season, which seems remarkable even just 18 games in given how close they’ve all been. It’s also a win that fits one of baseball’s most exciting, energetic teams perfectly.
With the air sucked out of the stadium following Boston’s four-run eighth inning, the Blue Jays started to chip away with doubles from Tapia and Santiago Espinal. It was George Springer, though, who delivered the first big blow with a mammoth home run to center. The two-run shot traveled 423 feet, a no-doubter, to force extras.
It helps that the Blue Jays had Jordan Romano, one of baseball’s best closers, waiting in the bullpen to shut down the Red Sox. His clean top of the 10th inning, preventing the automatic runner at second base from scoring, set up this win.
