Poor Spencer Dinwiddie.
Things have been rough for the 30-year-old Brooklyn Nets guard of late.
First, he got dragged into a war of words with Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma. Then he got absolutely destroyed by former Los Angeles Lakers forward Rick Fox, whom Dinwiddie mistakenly fired a stray shot at during the Kuzma incident.
Things haven’t been much better for Dinwiddie on the court, either. The Nets trail the Philadelphia 76ers 2-0 in the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. And Dinwiddie is a large part of his team’s problems.
In the two losses, Dinwiddie has shot just 10-26 for 26 points to go along with 13 assists and five turnovers. He’s also been much-maligned for his inability to throw a lob pass correctly.
Surely things can’t get worse for Dinwiddie, right?
Wrong.
When the NBA announced its referees for Thursday night’s playoff games, it assigned Tony Brothers as the crew chief for the Sixers and the Nets in Game 3.
In a vacuum, that should be a good thing. In fact, a recent anonymous poll of NBA players by The Athletic ranked Brothers as the league’s best referee.
But Dinwiddie probably wouldn’t agree with that sentiment.
That’s because he accused Brothers of calling him a b**** a** m*********** during a game earlier this season.
“If you watch the games, and I know that’s what refs are supposed to do, you’ll see I clap to get the attention of my teammates, things of that nature, so it was nothing personal,” Dinwiddie said after the game where the alleged incident occurred. “As a man, I would like to say I’m sorry, first and foremost,” “And secondarily, I would like to say not only would I like my money back, but I would like to not be called a ‘b**** a** m***********’ to my teammates.”
Brothers has not worked a game involving Dinwiddie since the incident. But hey, there’s no time like the present.
The good news for Dinwiddie is that he’s just a week or so away from a nice, hard-earned vacation.
