Hamilton’s lap, however, was nearly half a second slower than on Friday, when he topped second practice.

The world champion outpaced Bottas by 0.151s with a lap of 1m17.222s and Max Verstappen, third again, by over half a second.

Carlos Sainz put on a strong showing in the McLaren, finishing fourth after a brief stint in second place.

Sergio Perez rounded out the top five in the Racing Point ahead of Charles Leclerc, who was the leading Ferrari driver once more as teammate Sebastian Vettel wound up 12th.

The session was red-flagged with two minutes to go when Esteban Ocon lost control of his Renault and crashed head-on into the barriers when trying to avoid a slow Kevin Magnussen coming out of Turn 3.

All the quickest time were set on Pirelli’s soft tyres.
