Sources: Sheffield Wednesday agree to sign Leeds United star Ian Poveda

Sheffield Wednesday are close to completing a loan deal for Leeds United winger Ian Poveda, sources have told Football Insider.

The Owls are finalising a deal to sign the 23-year-old from their Yorkshire rivals before Thursday’s transfer deadline after reaching an agreement in principle.

Wednesday have been on the lookout for attacking reinforcements over the winter window as they look to escape the relegation zone in the Championship.

Danny Rohl’s side sit 23rd in the table with just 22 goals scored this season – the worst record in the Championship.

Poveda has struggled for regular first-team minutes at Leeds this season and has been given the green light to join another club on loan.

Poveda has made 10 appearances across all competitions this season, including only 144 minutes of Championship action.

He has fallen behind the likes of Dan James, Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto in Daniel Farke’s squad.

The Colombia international spent last season on loan at Blackpool where he scored three goals in 26 appearances as the Tangerines suffered relegation to League One.

Before his Blackpool spell, Poveda spent the 2021-22 season at Blackburn Rovers where he scored once in 10 appearances.

Poveda played for the academy sides at Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona and Manchester City before making his break in senior football.
