‘Someone said to me’: Journalist shares what he’s now been told about Reece James’ leadership at Chelsea

There’s a real leadership vacuum at Chelsea right now.
The Blues have signed a number of young, inexperienced players while shipping out a number of trusted lieutenants over the past 18 months.
The fact that Conor Gallagher has captained the side on numerous occasions after almost leaving the club in the summer says a lot, while the actual club captain, Reece James, doesn’t seem to be up to the task.
James is a fantastic player, but according to Dean Jones, speaking on the Chasing Green Arrows Podcast, he doesn’t have the personality of a captain with someone recently telling him that he’s a bit of an introverted character.

Jones shared what he knows about James and his personality.
“Look Reece just doesn’t have the personality that you can inflict on a team. Someone said to me the other day that he’s a bit of an introvert. He’s a lovely guy, genuinely a lovely bloke, the fact that he’s rooted in Chelsea and he has an identity as a part of the club helps him get the edge, but not really captain material as you would traditionally have it down,” Jones said.
Obvious choice
Reece James isn’t traditional captain material, and the annoying thing is that Chelsea have the perfect solution staring them in the face.

Thiago Silva is right there. He’s been there and done it all. He’s a leader on the pitch, and he’s a consummate professional that everyone can look up to.
James is a fantastic player, but he’s not on Silva’s level when it comes to leadership abilities and experience.
The Blues made their decision on who the club captain should be, and while James is a fantastic ambassador for the club, it sounds as though he’s a bit too quiet to be the true dressing room leader at Stamford Bridge.
