Some Democrats Open to Supporting McHenry – But Devil in Details

Rep. Dan Goldman (D., N.Y.) indicated that he was open to empowering Rep. Patrick McHenry (R., N.C.) to serve as a temporary speaker, but also acknowledged that the devil was in the details.
“Republicans can continue their civil war all they want and their dysfunction, but we’re not looking to extract significant concessions,” Goldman said. “We just want the House to open so we can get bills that are, that have bipartisan support on the floor that Speaker McCarthy did not put on the floor,” he said. “We’re looking to actually govern and get this place open so that we can do the essential work we need to.” One caveat: would this mean bringing to the floor bills that can bypass the House Rules Committee, where Republicans hold a lopsided majority? “That remains to be seen,” he said.
“If we’re going to be a lifeline, I think there’s going to be conditions,” said Rep. Raul Grijalva (D., Ariz.).
