Smart colt a knockout chance in Run To The Rose

Slick sectional data has given trainer Matthew Smith added confidence the promising Buenos Noches deserves his chance to take down the big guns in Saturday’s Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill.

Buenos Noches, Spanish for “good night”, is a $26 TAB outsider for the $250,000 event but has the ability to run well above that price after defying some big interference to run a terrific sixth in the San Domenico Stakes.

Smith’s colt was shot out the back of the field at the top of the straight last start in an incident that saw Nash Rawiller given a careless riding ban for his steer on Promitto.

He showed quality to pick himself up following the interference to hit the line hard, clocking the fastest final 200m of the race in 11.59 to finish less than half a length off race favourite Best Of Bordeaux.

“I would say if he didn’t get interfered with he would have run in the first three or four,” Smith said.

“He was solid and he is obviously pretty new.

“It’s not that it was his fault the interference he copped but if he knew a little bit more he might have been able to be another half a length in front of where he was and he might not of been in trouble.

“I have to say I was surprised to see that he was able to run the fastest final furlong after that interference so he must be a really decent horse to do that.

“He is a good looking horse and he works well so we will see how he measures up.

“Why not give him a shot.”

An eye-catching list of 18 three-year-olds have been nominated for the Run To The Rose including the returning Golden Slipper winner Fireburn.

Buenos Noches does not hold a nomination for the Golden Rose (1400m) in a fortnight and would need to pay late entry if he was to put himself in the frame for the $1m event.

Smith has entered the colt for the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 8 at Caulfield but is yet to determine if his smart type would be suited over longer journeys.

“We don‘t know yet if he is a sprinter or a horse that will run further,”

“I threw the nomination in for the Guineas because we thought he is a nice horse but I don‘t really know yet if he will run a mile.

“This is guy is out of a Northern Meteor mare, which was fast and the Sires (Supido) was fast so I am thinking that might be his go.”

Buenos Noches is rated a $26 chance in Caulfield Guineas betting.
