The Ford Transit Van has been moving cargo around Europe and the United States for more than 60 years. But vans aren’t just used for business cargo anymore, or just for carrying sports teams. They’re packed with camping gear and taken to the far ends of the traveled roads in what’s now called overlanding. The 2023 Ford Transit Trail is aimed squarely at those customers (who also are probably looking at the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van for similar purposes).

Turning the Transit into the Transit Trail involves upgrading most of the mechanicals and many of the accessories but keeping enough to make travel comfortable for at least two passengers.

It starts with 3.5 extra inches of ground clearance and 30.5-inch Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse all-terrain tires and 16-inch black alloy wheels. The 2023 Transit Trail also has a 2.75-inch wider track than the standard model for more stability on and off road.

All-wheel drive is standard on the Trail along with Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine making 310 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque with a ten-speed automatic transmission. Towing is rated at 6,500 pounds, with Ford noting that is enough to bring a smaller boat, four-wheelers or other adventure toys into the great outdoors.

Differentiating the 2023 Transit Trail from the base Transit are a black grille with integrated marker lamps and black HID headlamps, a unique skid plate-style front bumper, splash guards, wheel arch cladding and sliding side steps.

It’s available in three configurations including medium- and high-roof models and a high-roof extended-length. With the high roof it offers standing room for people 6-feet, 5-inches tall. Other creature comforts include SYNC4 with satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12-inch touchscreen, 110-volt, 12-volt and USB outlets.

Like the other Transit cargo vans, the Trail is customizable with areas for shelves and beds. A roof vent is optional, and an optional Upfitter Package adds an exterior light bar, upfitter switches, a larger center console, an auxiliary fuse panel with a high-spec interface connector, dual AGM batteries and a modified vehicle wiring system.

Similar to other vans of this nature, the 2023 Ford Transit Trail will be a canvas for professional upfitters to turn these empty vans into full recreational vehicles. Ford recommends its own network of upfitters, which allows customers to stop an any Ford dealer for service.

The 2023 Ford Transit Trail will start at $65,975 before taxes and destination.
