Six Years Ago Today, Erik Lamela Shocked World Football With Ridiculous 20-Yard Rabona

Lamela #Lamela

On this day in 2014, Tottenham midfielder Erik Lamela scored one of the most unique goals in football history; a 20-yard rabona. He would later call it the best of his career.

The Argentine brought White Hart Lane to its feet in the club’s Europa League Group C clash against Greek side Asteras Tripolis, wrapping his trusty left boot around the back of his right in a moment of utter genius.

It was a game full of memorable moments, with hat-trick hero Harry Kane ending up the clash in between the sticks, but Lamela stole the headlines with this magnificent finish.

Here are the official 1:28 highlights from the Europa League tie.

It was a goal like no other and when asked if it was indeed the best goal of his career, Lamela agreed.

“Yes, I think so. I’ve scored like that before, when I was playing in the junior sides at River Plate. It just happened in a flash.” he told The Guardian.

“I wasn’t thinking about doing something like that, I just wanted to score and it was the most effective, comfortable way of making it happen.

“It’s something I’ll always remember because it’s something different from the other goals I’ve scored.”

It was also a memorable night for Harry Kane, who played in two different positions during the 5-1 win.

The striker somehow managed to spill the ball into the back of the net from a free-kick and the rest is history.

Here is that hilarious moment from Tottenham’s Europa League tie against Tripolis. Never forget.

It’s not very often an outfield player is forced to play in goal but when they do, it’s priceless entertainment. Don’t give up the day job, Harry.

And what a goal from Lamela, by the way.
