Sir Sean Connery fans want to see Edinburgh Airport renamed in the late actor’s honour.
The iconic James Bond actor – who was the first to play 007 on the big screen – passed away at the age of 90 over the weekend, and fans have now begun a petition for the airport in the city of Edinburgh, where he spent most of his younger years, to be renamed to honour his legacy.
Connery was born in Fountainbridge, Scotland, but had spent years growing up in the Scottish capital.
According to a Change.org petition, fans want to see the airport renamed to Sir Sean Connery Airport, and as of the time of writing, the petition has almost 2,000 of the 2,500 votes needed to take the petition to the next stage.
The description for the petition reads: “Liverpool has John Lennon airport, Belfast has George Best airport and with the death of one of her most famous sons Edinburgh should have a Sir Sean Connery airport.
“Please vote and circulate this petition for maximum coverage.”
The news comes after Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said the country is mourning the lost of “one of its best loved sons” following Connery’s passing.
She wrote on social media at the time of his death: “I was heartbroken to learn this morning of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. Our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons.
“Sean was born into a working class Edinburgh family and through talent & sheer hard work, became an international film icon and one of the world’s most accomplished actors. (sic)”
And fellow Scottish member of parliament Alex Salmond called Connery “the world’s greatest Scot”.
He added: “The world’s greatest Scot, the last of the real Hollywood stars, the definitive Bond.
“Sean Connery was all of these things but much more.
“He was a staunch patriot, a deep thinker and an outstanding human being.”
Connery’s family confirmed on Saturday (31.10.20) the legendary actor had passed away in his sleep while in the Bahamas.
