U.S. women’s gymnastics star Simone Biles went into the Tokyo Games facing immense expectations and hype. The 24-year-old and 4-time Olympic gold medalist was expected — unfairly — to cruise through the competition and add to her tally of gold medals.

So, when Biles withdrew from the team competition after getting lost in the air on her vault attempt, she made the courageous decision to focus on her mental health in the face of that vast pressure from everywhere. Biles — who had the “twisties,” which can be dangerous — would also withdraw from the individual all-around competition.

And as she took a step back to focus on her mental wellness, she came to a realization that she wanted to share on Twitter. Biles posted a heartfelt thank you on Thursday in Tokyo.

Biles will be in attendance Thursday to cheer on her teammates Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey in the women’s gymnastics individual all-around competition.

It remains to be seen if she will compete again in Tokyo. Either way, she’s making a positive impact.
