KUALA LUMPUR: Global star Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh topped South China Morning Post’s (SCMP) recent 11 Asian icons who shaped the 2022 list.
The list highlights the outstanding achievements made by Asian celebrities and figures around the world this year.
At No.1, the Ipoh-born actress has taken over Hollywood and made an indelible impression with her role as Evelyn Quan Wang in 2022’s quirky action dramedy Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Describing her international status as a bona fide talent, SCMP said: “No wonder she was named Time’s 2022 Icon of the Year, an honour which celebrated Yeoh’s 40-year acting career.”
The list also included Jin from uber-popular K-Pop group BTS in fourth place, who recently enlisted for his mandatory 18-month military service in South Korea.
“We can’t help but admire 30-year-old Jin’s courage and sense of duty, especially considering the group’s atmospheric level of international fame,” said SCMP.
Another K-Pop entry was red hot girl group BlackPink who made it to No.5.
Recently announced by Time as 2022’s Entertainer of the Year, the four talented idols — Lisa, Jennie, Rosé and Jisoo — have racked up several milestones including the release of its highly successful sophomore album, Born Pink.
Korean actress HoYeon Jung who was the breakout star from Netflix’s global hit series Squid Game came in at No.6.
SCMP said: “This stunning South Korean model made her on-screen debut in the wildly popular survival thriller series and showed impressive acting chops.”
Canadian actor Simu Liu who played Marvel’s first lead Asian superhero was No.9 on the list.
The Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings star was also named one of Time’s most 100 influential people in 2022.
SCMP said: “It doesn’t get more iconic than that!”
