SHINee Returns With “Don’t Call Me” MV and New Album

Clear your schedule, because SHINee’s back!!

On February 22, K-pop veterans and icons SHINee released the video for their title track “Don’t Call Me.” The comeback for the group has been highly anticipated ever since the oldest three members — Onew, Key, and Minho — returned from military enlistment. In their new music video, they rejoin Taemin for a full-throttle musical experience that ushers in a new SHINee era.

Composed by Kenzie, Dwayne ‘Dem Jointz’ Abernathy Jr., and Rodnae ‘Chikk’ Bell, “Don’t Call Me,” finds SHINee experimenting sonically with trap, EDM, and hip-hop, with a sophisticated piano-led bridge that really highlights the group’s signature intricate harmonies. The use of 808 bass sounds and dark synths are noticeably different from what fans are used to hearing from SHINee, further fleshing out their musical universe.

“Don’t Call Me” is possibly one of the group’s darkest concepts to date; the lyrics are filled with disdain as they address an ex-lover who has turned obsessive, and the track serves as a warning for them to stay away. “You find my traces and lick them” they sing, adding, “I keep telling you, There is no ‘next time’ in your life, I’m no longer your love. Erase it, forget about me please/ I don’t know you, so don’t call me.”

The music video features the group in high fashion, getting a little gritty in an abandoned train station as the members roam around in gravity-defying sets. In a particularly memorable circle shot, Onew, Minho, Key, and Taemin dance in perfect sync overtop mysterious, jangling piano.

Nothing could prepare us for Key once again proving that whether it’s a feathered hat or a red ensemble, he looks good in anything. See also: Taemin’s smooth criminal body rolls, Onew confirming that his vocal range is not of this world, and Minho’s striking look in a cowboy hat, abs forward and out.

The song is the title track of their seventh album, Don’t Call Me, which is also out today. The release also marks the group’s first comeback together in three years since their 2018 LP The Story of Light. Across nine catchy, immersive songs, the album serves as a reminder that SHINee is forever one of one.
