NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ Sheriff Orvis Campbell will be running for reelection in 2024 as an independent, instead of a Democrat.

Campbell, who was first elected in 2016, announced Monday he has resigned his membership in the Democratic Party executive committee and all other committees.

“I have come to this decision because I truly believe I should be independent while serving all people in Tuscarawas County,” he said.

“I love Tuscarawas County and I love serving as your sheriff. Politics have divided America more intensely than usual in recent years and I want no part in that. I have voted for and supported individuals in both parties my entire adulthood. I have never, nor would I ever vote for someone solely because of party affiliation. I love Tuscarawas County too much to do that.

“I have served alongside some amazing Democrats and Republicans. I find myself moving further from the beliefs of both national parties who seem to me to operate more in the extremes and think less like the moderate folks here in Tuscarawas County.

“My greatest hope with this announcement is that no one will care, but I feel strongly that the people of Tuscarawas County have a right to know where I stand politically if I am asking for their vote.”
