Their financial problems are set to limit their recruitment plans when the transfer market opens this week.

Together with no upturn in the results it has quickly put a strain on the relationship between the manager and Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

‘The performances and results have not been of the level expected since Tony Pulis was appointed,’ said Chansiri in a statement.

‘There are also other issues which have had a bearing on this decision. On the pitch, seven points from a possible 30 is not acceptable.

‘It is vital we maintain our Championship status and I feel I must make a change now with over half of the season remaining to give us the best possible chance of doing so.’

Pulis came in to replace Garry Monk and spoke of restoring the club to its former glory and leading them back to the Premier League but he waited nine games for his first win.

It came against Coventry and was followed by a creditable draw at Blackburn on Boxing Day but it was not enough to save him from the sack.

First team coach Neil Thompson will take charge of the team for Tuesday’s game against Middlesbrough and until a permanent appointment is made.

Former Chelsea and Barnsley coach Jose Morais is among the names being considered by Sheffield Wednesday following the sacking of Pulis.

Morais, 55, is vastly experienced having worked around the globe and notably at Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea with Jose Mourinho.

Nigel Pearson, Phil Neville and Sol Campbell were all linked with the Hillsborough job when Pulis was appointed.

Gus Poyet is another name thought be among those under consideration.
