Sheffield Wednesday manager odds: Garry Monk sacked, Tony Pulis favourite to join Sky Bet Championship strugglers

Pulis #Pulis

After Monk was finally relieved of his duties at Hillsborough on Monday following a dire start to the new season, Pulis has been backed into 1/3 with Sky Bet to take over.

Pulis has been out of work since leaving Middlesbrough at the end of the 2018/19 season but experienced success with Stoke after getting them promoted to the Premier League in 2008.

Early on Tuesday morning, former Wigan manager Paul Cook was the favourite for the role but he has since drifted out to 3/1. Cook has a solid track record having impressed in his time at the DW Stadium as well as enjoying success at Chesterfield and Portsmouth.

He is understood to be one of a number of options Wednesday are considering with former player Nigel Pearson another, given his record at Leicester and Watford and the likelihood he would be a popular appointment with fans.

Owls call time on Monk’s reign

The Owls sacked Garry Monk just days after having their 12-point deduction halved.

Their appeal against a sanction for breaking EFL rules was partially upheld last week, meaning Saturday’s goalless draw at home to Millwall was enough to take them off the bottom of the table for the first time this season.

But it was not enough to save Monk’s job, who leaves after 14 months in charge.

“I feel the time is right to make a change and I wish Garry and his team all the best for the future,” said chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

“I would like to say thank you for the time and effort Garry and his staff have committed to Sheffield Wednesday.”

After an initial upturn following Monk’s appointment saw the Owls in contention for a play-off place, a sharp drop in form saw them ultimately finish 16th last term.

Wednesday have won just seven Championship matches in 2020.

In total, Monk won 18 of his 58 games at Hillsborough, losing 25 and drawing 15.

The former Swansea boss is now looking for his fifth different club since leaving Leeds in May 2017, having also managed Middlesbrough and Birmingham before arriving in South Yorkshire.

For Wednesday, they are now seeking a fifth permanent manager since December of that same year.
