New details have emerged concerning starting Boston Celtics center Robert Williams III as the big man recovers from an arthroscopic procedure he underwent a few weeks ago. According to Shams Charania on the “Run it Back” show, Williams received a platelet-rich plasma injection his left knee to “continue to promote healing.”

Back in September, Williams underwent a scope on his previously injured knee. Reporting at the time indicated he could miss 8-12 weeks of action. Shams stated Williams hopes to return to action in December or January, but it’s possible he won’t be back until the second half of the season.

PRP injections are used to treat pain in knee injuries, as well as to limit the impact of things like arthritis. Recipients may experience reduced pain and improved flexibility but often receive a second or third shot months later.

Shams added the Celtics are going to be “very cautious,” and that if it were the postseason, Williams may already be playing. Instead, he and the club will look to ensure his injury fully heals and he comes back with any lingering concerns minimized.
