Alex Trebek‘s final episode of Jeopardy aired tonight and the final moments of the half-hour were even more heartbreaking than we expected.

The longtime host filmed his final episode of the quiz show just 10 days before his death and he clearly expected to be back at work to do more episodes.

“Thank you ladies and gentlemen for spending the time with us. We’ll see you again next week,” Alex said in the clip.

Right after the send-off, the show cut to a farewell tribute for Alex that featured clips of him from his 37 seasons with the show. The montage ended with a title card that said, “Dedicated to Alex Trebek. Forever in our hearts. Always our inspiration.”

It’s heartbreaking to know that Alex was ready to film more episodes of the show before he passed away.

The show will indeed return next week with former champion Ken Jennings as the guest host. A second guest host has already been announced.
