See Marshall’s stunning pick-six to help secure huge road upset vs. No. 8 Notre Dame
Marshall #Marshall
Against Marshall on Saturday, No. 8 Notre Dame didn’t exactly look like the team that held its own for a while against Ohio State last weekend.
In fact, it didn’t even look like it deserved to be a top-10 team with the way the Fighting Irish played, and college football fans roasted the team after its 26-21 loss to the unranked Thundering Herd.
At home against Marshall, Notre Dame didn’t even get on the board until late in the second quarter when quarterback Tyler Buchner ran for a 1-yard touchdown to take a 7-6 lead over the Thundering Herd. But Marshall quickly responded and had the lead for a lot of the game, including with about five minutes left in the fourth quarter with a 19-15 advantage.
Trying to lead Notre Dame to a comeback win, Buchner threw his second interception of the game at one of the most inopportune times possible, and Marshall made him and his team pay.
With 4:35 left in the fourth, Thundering Herd defensive back Steven Gilmore picked off Buchner’s pass and ran it back for a 37-yard touchdown, extending Marshall’s lead to 26-15. Here’s a look at this incredible pick six:
It wasn’t good.
Notre Dame ended up scoring a late touchdown in its comeback attempt, but it wasn’t enough and Marshall held on for an impressive upset on the road. In fact, according to NBC’s game broadcast, this is only the second time Marshall has beaten a top-10 team, previously upsetting then-No. 6 Kansas State in 2003.
Well done, Thundering Herd.
