Section III playoff roundup: Liverpool advances to Class AA girls volleyball semifinals

Third-seeded Liverpool took care of business against sixth-seeded Auburn in Saturday afternoon’s Class AA girls volleyball sectional quarterfinals.

The Warriors (14-4) blanked Auburn in three straight games: 25-13, 25-8, 25-1.

Saturday’s 3-0 victory was Liverpool second time beating the Maroon Knights this season. The Warriors won their first matchup 3-0 on Sept. 23.

Liverpool now advances to the semifinals to face second-seeded Fayetteville-Manlius at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Hornets won both of their regular season meetings with the Warriors.

Class D

Bishop Grimes 3, Bishop Ludden 2

It was a tightly-contested, back-and-forth matchup between the fourth-seeded Gaelic Knights (9-6) and fifth-seeded Cobras (8-8) in Saturday’s quarterfinal at Bishop Ludden High School.

Bishop Grimes opened the day with a 25-23 victory in game one. Bishop Ludden responded 25-17 win in the second game.

The Cobras won game three 25-12, the Gaelic Knights took game four 25-11, and Bishop Grimes came out on top 15-12 in the final game.

Senior Avery Burnette led Bishop Grimes with one ace, 23 kills and 12 digs. Senior Tori Sikorski had seven aces two assists and 20 digs, and senior Tori Coppola finished with one ace, two kills, 33 assists and 11 digs.

The Cobras now advance to the semifinals to face top-seeded LaFayette at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Section III diving trails

The Section III Class A, B and C diving trails were held at the Nottingham High School pool on Saturday.

Cicero-North Syracuse diver Kaitlyn Carroll won the Class A title with an 11-dive total of 468.15. West Genesee diver Lily Mauro was second with a 399.55 total while Cicero-North Syracuse diver Sophia Sugrue took third with a 389.80.

Jamesville-DeWitt diver Kayla McQuaid won the Class B event with an 11-dive total of 434.65. She was followed by Liliana Mulchy, of New Hartford with a 371.35 total, while of Indian River’s Cadence Muchnikoff was third with a 330.15 score.

Class C diving results were not immediately available.

Section III divers will next compete in the state qualifier Diving Championships on Tuesday at the Nottingham High School pool.
