Seattle Sounders vs. Pumas UNAM score: MLS club makes history by winning Concacaf Champions League

Champions League #ChampionsLeague

It took five tries with four ending in disappointment but the Seattle Sounders have won Concacaf Champions League and are heading to the Club World Cup. The Sounders defeated Pumas UNAM 3-0 — they won 5-2 on aggregate — despite losing two players to injury in the first 30 minutes.

Nouhou Tolo suffered a quad injury following a tackle from Ricardo Galindo and was replaced by Kelyn Rowe but the bigger blow was Joao Paulo going down due to a non-contact knee injury. Obed Vargas, 16, would sub in to replace him in midfield becoming the youngest player to appear in a Concacaf Champions League final.

It would be none other than Raul Ruidiaz who would ensure that this game would end in Seattle’s favor with a brace in the match. When the team needed it before the half, his shot took a deflection to get things going before he iced the match in the 80th minute with help from Jordan Morris and Nicolas Lodeiro.

Vargas didn’t look out of place as he and the Sounders weathered a storm to make history in more ways than one. In front of a record 68,741 fans at Lumen Field, Nicolas Lodeiro even got in on the fun. He scored the Sounders’ third goal in the 87th minute as Morris’ shot was unlucky to go off of the post.

Pumas, playing in their first Concacaf Champions League final, had their chances in the match, but the day belonged to Seattle as the Sounders will carry the banner for MLS and Concacaf. They become the first MLS team to win the tournament since the reformat in 2009 from the Champions Cup. First was Concacaf and next up is the Club World Cup for Brian Schmeltzer’s men.
