Search for Christmas songs saw spike during Michigan’s last cold snap

Christmas #Christmas

It looks like we get more in the Christmas mood with each blast of cold fall air. A company has now quantified just how festive we are feeling.

Sonos has developed a S.A.N.T.A. Index. S.A.N.T.A. stands for Seasonal Audio Noise Tracking Aggregator. With the S.A.N.T.A. Index, Sonos is going to track how many times our five favorite Christmas songs and movies are searched and streamed. The company believes they will be able to tell when the majority of us are in the Christmas mood.

When the S.A.N.T.A. Index reaches a value of 50, Sonos indicates most of us are ready to watch Elf or listen to Bing Crosby sing White Christmas.

Sonos noticed the S.A.N.T.A. Index shot up in an initial want for Christmas cheer during our cold spell two weeks ago.

According to Sonos: “On October 18th, 2.3 million people were streaming Christmas music on the Sonos app, or talking about “listening to holiday music” on social media. During the cold air intrusion in the 24 hours after October 18, the number of people streaming Christmas music jumped to 3.1 million people – the biggest spike in Christmas music listening that we have seen thus far this season!”

That’s the same day part of the Upper Peninsula had over one foot of snow.

Just two days before we started getting interested in “Jingle Bells,” Mariah Carey wasn’t even ready to hear herself on every radio station. She tweeted from her bathtub “not yet” to her Christmas songs and putting up a Christmas tree.

Sonos says only 11% of the U.S. was ready to hear Mariah on Oct.16. Just two days later, 16% of us could handle Mariah singing “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

Sonos thinks five songs and five movies can gauge our level of Christmas cheer. They are using these songs to track us, not Santa Claus:

  • “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby
  • “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande
  • “Last Christmas” by Wham!
  • “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas” by Michael Bublé
  • “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey
  • The classic Christmas movies we stream when in the spirit are:

  • “The Grinch”
  • “Die Hard”
  • “Home Alone”
  • “Elf “
  • “A Christmas Story”
  • You can see exactly what level of Christmas cheer we are currently at here.

It’s not time for you to go whole-hog on Christmas music and movies. The Jingle Bells level is currently 34 as of Nov. 1. Sonos indicates a Jingle Bells level of 50 indicates at least half of us are ready for Christmas tunes and flicks.

With the very warm weather over the next week, you are going to need to hold off on cranking up the Mariah Carey Christmas tunes. If you jump the gun, your family and friends may develop a Grinchy attitude toward you.
