‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’: Meet the Anime’s Complete Voice Cast

Scott Pilgrim and the Sex Bob-ombs are back, alongside Ramona Flowers and her League of Evil Exes in Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
All eight episodes of the anime adaptation — and in some ways, expansion — of the beloved Scott Pilgrim universe released on Friday, nearly 20 years after the graphic novel and 13 years after the movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Set in Toronto “not too long ago,” Scott asks out Ramona Flowers, the girl of his dreams, but quickly finds that in order to date her, he must defeat her seven evil exes. That includes Lucas Lee, Todd Ingram, Gideon Graves, Matthew Patel, Roxie Ritcher, and twins Ken and Kyle Katayanagi. The award-winning Japanese animation house, Science SARU, and UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, produce the anime spin for Netflix, where electric battles are underscored by even better electric guitar riffs.
Fans of the live-action cast are likely pleased to know they’ve all returned to voice their respective characters in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, including Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the members of Sex Bob-ombs, Scott’s friends and family, and Ramona’s intense collection of exes.
The sprawling guest cast was also announced on day of launch and includes: Will Forte, Finn Wolfhard, Al Yankovic, Kal Penn, Kirby Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, Nelson Franklin, Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, Kevin McDonald, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Haas, Kristina Pesic, Bo Barrett, Ryan Simpkins, Nathan Moore, Bill Parks, Stefan Johnson, Trevor Wilson, Griffin Newman, Matt Watts, Stephen Root and Cal Dodd.
In The Hollywood Reporter‘s review, Chief TV Critic Daniel Fienberg said the series “looks and feels exactly like O’Malley’s books look and feel, which is hugely satisfying, while at the same time being a less dazzling feat of imagination than the magic Wright was able to achieve in the movie. The series lets the surprises come from the story instead of from the way the wonder is being achieved.”

Michael Cera has retuned for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off to voice the titular character. A 23-year-old slacker from Toronto, Scott shares a bed with his roommate Wallace, plays bass in indie band Sex Bom-omb and is about to face off against the League of Exes for a chance to date Ramona Flowers. Cera, who has done voice roles for animated series throughout his career (including Braceface, The Lego Batman Movie and Sausage Party) became a major Hollywood name in the 2000s with roles in Arrested Development, Superbad, Juno and Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. He’s most recently appeared in Barbie, Dream Scenario and The Adults.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead voices Ramona Flowers, the girl of — and from — Scott’s dreams. She’s recently moved to Toronto from New York City, and is desperate to move on, but that remains to be seen with her seven evil exes always just a step behind. One of Winstead’s earliest roles was on the now-ended NBC soap opera, before she appeared in a string of horror and action films like Grindhouse and Black Christmas. Since starring in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, she’s appeared in 10 Cloverfield Lane, Birds of Prey and Ashoka.

Kieran Culkin stars as Wallace, Scott’s older and cooler gay roommate. For Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the 25-year-old remains as much a smartass as he is a gossip. Culkin recently finished his run in HBO’s award-winning drama Succession, and starred in a number of projects before and between the release of the live-action and anime Scott Pilgrim installments. That includes Fargo, She’s All That, Father of the Bride and recent animated titles Solar Opposites, Teenage Euthanasia and Agent Elvis.

Anna Kendrick is back after starring in the live-action Scott Pilgrim film for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off as the voice of Scott’s smarter and more mature younger sister, Stacey. She works at a local coffee shop with Julie and loves to gossip with Scott’s friend, Wallace. Kendrick has recently lent her voice to the Trolls franchise, including Trolls Band Together and Trolls World Tour. She’s also starred in a Simple Favor, Up in the Air, and franchises like Twilight and Pitch Perfect.

Aubrey Plaza is the voice behind Julie Powers, Ramona’s first friend and an ex to Sex Bom-omb’s lead vocalist, Stephen Stills. She works in a coffee shop with Scott’s sister, Stacey, and is known for both her penchant for swearing and not being a fan of Scott. Plaza’s gained national recognition in Parks and Recreation, and has since appeared in Black Bear, The White Lotus, Legion, as well as animated projects Little Demon, The Legend of Korra and Monsters University.

Chris Evans is Lucas Lee, a skater-boy turned world-famous actor who dated Ramona in high school before taking on the title of her second evil ex. Like several of his Scott Pilgrim Takes Off co-stars, Evans went from villain to hero, portraying several major superheros on the big screen including Johnny Storm (Human Torch) in Fantastic Four and most memorably Steven Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America the first Avenger in the MCU. Evans has also recently starred in Ghosted and Knives Out.

Brie Larson is the voice of Envy Adams, the lead singer of The Clash at Demonhead and currently dating Ramona’s vegan evil ex, Todd Ingram. Larson’s rendition of “Black Sheep” for the live-action film matched the energy of Metric’s official song in one of the live-action film’s best scenes. Larson won an Oscar for her performance in 2016’s Room, and is currently portraying MCU hero Captain Marvel in the character’s big screen sequel The Marvels.

Ramona’s most recent evil ex, Gideon Graves, is voiced by his live-action counterpart Jason Schwartzman. Ramona’s seventh ex and the leader of the League of Evil Exes, Graves is the CEO of New York City–based G-Man Media and is on a mission to get Ramona back. Schwartzman has starred in a bevy of projects, including Asteroid City, Rushmore and The Darjeeling Limited, as well as animated projects Fantastic Mr. Fox and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Brandon Routh is the voice behind Ramona’s third evil ex, Todd Ingram. Todd, a bassist, comes as a package deal alongside Brie Larson’s Envy Adams, whose the lead singer of their rock band The Clash at Demonhead. Todd is memorable for his vegan diet, which give him vegan powers. Before his role in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Routh appeared in Superman Returns, with later appearances across The CW’s DC universe of shows, including The Flash, Arrow and most notably DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Mae Whitman is back to voice the anime version of Roxie Ritcher, Ramona’s former college roommate with incredibly fighting abilities, she’s the fourth evil ex and the only woman in the League of Evil Exes. Before Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Whitman starred in The Duff, Parenthood, Arrested Development and Good Girls. She also has a long history of voice work in major animated projects, most recently Skull Island, Young Justice and The Owl House.

Satya Bhabha returns as Matthew Patel, the first evil ex Scott faces, who basically dated Ramona for a week in middle school. He’s lowest ranked but whose mystical powers still present a challenge for Scott. The 2010 live-action adaptation was one of Bhabha’s first screen roles, with the actor going on to appear in New Girl, The Good Wife, Eastsiders and Netflix’s Sense 8.

Julian Cihi is the only Scott Pilgrim Takes Off star to voice not one but two evil exes. Cihi portrays Ken and Kyle Katayanagi, Ramona’s fifth and six exes who she dated in college. The identical Japanese twins are genius roboticists and were played by Keita Saitou and Shôta Saitô in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Cihi most recently starred in the first season of Only Murders in the Building, along with appearances in Mr. Robot, High Maintenance and The Tick.

Alison Pill plays Kim Pine, the drummer for Sex Bob-omb. The pragmatic 23-year-old currently works at a video store, but in school, briefly dated Scott — something she’d rather forget. Pill has been acting since the late ’90s, including the 1999 animated series Redwall and 2000 movie follow-up. Before the Scott Pilgrim live-action film, she also appeared in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Dan in Real Life and Milk. She’s since appeared in Midnight in Paris, Snowpiercer, The Newsroom, Star Trek: Picard and Them.

Ellen Wong plays the 17-year-old Knives Chau, both Scott’s biggest fan (and sort-of girlfriend), and Sex Bob-omb’s second-biggest fan. With only a handful of screen appearances before Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the movie was Wong’s first film project. The actress went on to star in Combat Hospital, The Carrie Diaries, Dark Matter, The Circle, Netflix’s Glow and most recently Beacon 23.

Mark Webber plays the 22-year-old Stephen Stills, Sex Bob-omb’s talented lead vocalist, guitarist and songwriter. The ex of Julie Powers, Stills frequently turns to his friends to help him perform, as he faces anxiety and stage fright. Like many Scott Pilgrim Takes Off cast members, Webber has mostly worked in live-action, making his screen debut in the late ’90s and since appearing in Drive Me Crazy, Snow Day, Jessabelle and SMILF.

Johnny Simmons returns as Young Neil, the roommate to Webber’s Stephen Stills. Young and a bit of an idiot, Johnny is Sex Bob-omb’s No. 1 fan. Before starring in the live-action adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, Simmons appeared in another cult classic Jennifer’s Body. Following the 2010 film, he had roles in 21 Jump Street, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, fellow Netflix series Girlboss, and the Oscar-winning Whiplash.
