Scotland fans want Andy Robertson stripped of captaincy after post-beer Ukraine flop

Angry Scotland fans have demanded Liverpool star Andy Robertson be stripped of the captaincy after the defender’s dismal display in the 3-1 defeat to Ukraine in the World Cup play-off.
The Reds defender was spotted during their celebration of their cup double with an open-top bus parade on Merseyside, parading their FA Cup and Carabao Cup trophies. And the full-back caused a stir after he was spotted holding a beer, just days before Scotland’s crunch encounter.
The situation was only exacerbated after Robertson’s off-colour display as Steve Clarke’s side fell to a disappointing defeat at Hampden Park. Andriy Yarmolenko sprung the offside trap to lob Craig Gordon to open the scoring and Roman Yaremchuk headed home a second shortly after the interval, with Scotland paying the price for a lacklustre display.

Callum McGregor got the hosts back into it in the second half after a goalkeeping howler from Heorhiy Bushchan, but as the Tartan Army pressed for an equaliser, Artem Dovbyk slotted home a third in stoppage defeat to seal their fate.
When asked about the incident on Tuesday in his press conference, Clarke insisted he was happy to see Robertson find a way to pick himself up after Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat. “I saw the clip and I was pleased he was getting over his disappointment. Some people want to make too much out of small things”, Clarke said.
“It was the right thing to do, the right thing to celebrate with his team and his supporters on the back of a fantastic season for Liverpool. He has joined us in a great place and that’s all I am concerned about.I don’t care about criticism. It won’t bother Andy and it certainly won’t bother me.”

But clearly, Scotland fans felt differently to their manager as they piled in on Robertson on social media. While there is no evidence to suggest Robertson was drunk, that hasn’t stopped upset supporters from voicing their feelings about the skipper’s actions.
One fan wrote: “Andy Robertson was an absolute disgrace. Celebrating drinking beer on a bus few days before one of our biggest games in 20 years. That’s not my captain and his performance summed it up.”
Another Scotland fan called for him to be removed as captain: “Andy Robertson should be stripped of the Scotland captaincy. (Holding a beer) 2 days before a huge game and serves up a performance like that? An absolute disgrace of a performance both on the park and off the park.”

One supporter declared: “Get that captaincy taken off Andy Robertson”, while another agreed and said: “That’s embarrassing.”
Another said: “Well done Andy Robertson those beers really helped your performance today”, but one Scotland fan stuck up for the captain, responding: “What should he do? Not celebrate his season?”
Ukraine will now play Wales in the play-off final in Cardiff to decide which nation will play at the World Cup in November, with Scotland and Robertson left to wait until 2026 for another crack at ending their hoodoo.
