Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) reacted to a Republican resolution this week to censure him, calling the measure a “terrible abuse of House resources.”
GOP members in the House are attempting to fine Schiff $16 million for advancing claims of Russian collusion in the 2016 election with former President Donald Trump.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) proposed the measure to censure Schiff on Tuesday, the same day Trump was arrested on federal charges of mishandling classified documents found in his Mar-a-Lago estate.
“I’m flattered by it, but the fact that Speaker McCarthy would take up this MAGA resolution when we have so many pressing challenges before the country is really a terrible abuse of House resources,” Schiff said in an interview with CNN Wednesday.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has gone after Schiff in the past, removing him from the House Intelligence Committee, along with Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), earlier this year.
Schiff said Luna moving forward with the censure vote is a distraction from Trump’s indictment and arrest on 37 counts led by special counsel Jack Smith.
Schiff called the resolution a GOP effort to “gratify” Trump by attacking his “most effective adversary.”
Through reviewing the text of the resolution, Schiff noted the content is “a grab bag of Fox attacks” and that the basis of the censure is over outrage that he led “the first impeachment on Donald Trump to a bipartisan vote to convict.”
The California Democrat entered the national spotlight after taking on the role as lead prosecutor in Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2020 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

An outspoken opponent of the Republican 2024 presidential front-runner, Schiff called the facts in the indictment “devastating” because they show “premeditation on Trump’s part.” Schiff added that Trump led a “deliberate effort to mislead investigators” and used his attorneys in an attempt to deceive the FBI.
Schiff announced at the beginning of the year he would be running for Senate in 2024, joining a competitive Democratic primary race for the California seat held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
