San Jose: Man injured, dog dies in house fire near Almaden Quicksilver County Park

Jose #Jose

SAN JOSE — A man suffered serious burns and a pet dog died after a fire broke out at a South San Jose home near Almaden Quicksilver County Park, according to the fire department.

The one-alarm fire was first reported around 2:30 a.m. Thursday on the 21000 block of Bertram Road and San Jose Fire Department personnel arrived to find smoke emanating from a two-story home, spokesperson Erica Ray said.

Two men who lived at the home were able to get outside on their own, but one had suffered “significant burn injuries” and was taken to an area hospital, Ray said. The second resident was evaluated at the scene and released with no reported injuries.

Three animals were said to be in the home — two dogs and a cat — and as of 9 a.m., one of the dogs was found dead, Ray said.

Firefighters took about 75 minutes to get the fire under control. Crews were briefly delayed in reaching the home because a nearby bridge couldn’t support the weight of the fire engines, prompting them to find an alternate crossing a bit further away, Ray said.

No firefighter injuries were reported, and a cause for the fire is under investigation.
